TELEVISION'S OCCASIONAL POT OF GOLD

Some people have referred to TV as a vast wasteland.
But sometimes, if you're paying close attention, you might find a pot of gold.
In 1979, I was watching television..... actually, I was anchoring a newscast here at Channel 4, when I saw something on the screen that changed my life.
Sharon Puckett was on the news desk with me that night, to present a story about the newest trends in fashion.
On the film, she was interviewing a local fashion expert.... honestly, the most stunning woman I had ever seen.... who was explaining about the outfits being modeled.
While the film was showing, and we were not on camera, I turned to Sharon and asked, "Who is that?!!" Those were my exact words.... I remember them well.
She gave me the fashion expert's name, Karen Wedgeworth, and later her number.
I called, but she was obviously quite busy, because I spent the next month or so trying to convince the fashion expert to join me for dinner or a movie.
Finally, I figured out that I'd have to call her far in advance..... which I did.
On our first date, we saw Woody Allen's "Manhattan" at the old Tennessee Theatre on Church Street.
The shirt and jacket I wore that night are still hanging in my closet.
Karen won't let me forget how she changed my life by steering me away from polyester, and into the world of cotton and nicer fabrics.
She changed my life in other ways as well. Those I'll keep to myself.
But I will tell you that she's my wife, and the mother of my "later in life surprise blessing".
So today I'll wish Happy Valentine's Day to the love of my life, Karen, who still does what she can to lift me up, fashion-wise -- and otherwise.
